Dagestan to be Hosted 2nd International Forum on “Sustainable Development of Mountainous Areas”

Each year on 11 December, International Mountain Day is celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of mountain ecosystems. Issues related to their preservation and potential solutions are discussed by experts at international platforms.

One such platform was the 2nd International Mountain Forum on Sustainable Development of Mountainous Areas.This time, it was held as an off-site event in the Republic of Dagestan (Russian Federation) in October 2025.

The forum focused on The Role of Municipalities in Making Environmentally Significant Decisions for the Sustainable Development of Mountainous Areas.Participants include MPs, representatives of executive authorities, local governments from CIS Countries and beyond, as well as members of the global scientific community and international organizations.

The program of the event addressed key aspects of sustainable development in mountainous areas, including habitat conservation and improving the well-being of local populations. In addition, the forum serves as a platform to raise awareness about climate change and its impacts, as well as for ecological monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of local initiatives.

The forum is organized by the IPA CIS, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Geographical Society, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Dagestan, the CIS Executive Committee, the Commission for the Development of the Agro-Industrial Complex and Rural Areas of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. The forums partner is Nataliya Thornquists charitable foundation, Natures Revival.

The key ideas and proposals from the forum participants were incorporated into the Final Resolution, which was sent to the parliaments of CIS Member States, relevant ministries and agencies, and international organizations.
